Today we’ll explore why ‘Click here’ isn’t great for our readers. Art covers generative art, optical illusions, drawing toys and creative tools that run on a canvas. You usually don’t even need to rewrite your copy; you just need to move which words are part of the hyperlink. Modern user-focused copywriting favours device-agnostic, action-oriented verbs like View, Download, Read, or Explore.
If not ‘Click here’, perhaps you’ve used ‘Learn more’ or another repetitive hyperlink phrase. We believe designers are thinkers as much as they are makers. Hit the heart on a site you want to come back to. Hit the heart while viewing any site to add it to your favorites, and everything you land on is kept in your history. The default All mode mixes art and fun. The shuffle works through every site in a category before it repeats any of them, and it remembers where it got to between visits, so every press is a fresh discovery.

The most straightforward answer is to use descriptive anchor text that tells users what’s on the other end of the link. As you’ll know if it’s ever happened to you, coming across the phrase “click here” can be very jarring when you’re using a touchscreen or remote control. Today, however, people access information from various devices, including smartphones, tablets, smart devices, watches, and even TVs.

Writing better links without “click here”
Writing “click here” not only ignores those other modes of navigation, but implies that other modes are not supported. Most of those visitors aren’t using a mouse. Why would you forfeit such an important opportunity to describe the content you’re linking to?
